In December, the Irish government announced that Ireland would enter Level 5 restrictions to reduce the spread of coronavirus and in particular, the new variants of the virus. In recent months, these restrictions have been eased gradually and are due to further ease from the 10th May.
Currently, you can travel within your county or up to 20 km from your home and two fully vaccinated people can meet indoors. Two non-vaccinated households can meet outdoors, away from their gardens. Please note, it still remains that you should not visit other households indoors except for essential purposes.
Schools and childcare services have fully reopened, and all construction work has resumed. It is still advised to work from home, unless your work is an essential service that cannot be done from home.
Only essential retail can open and bars, cafes and restaurants remain closed except for take-away food and delivery. Funerals can have 25 people in attendance.
From the 10th May, intercountry travel will resume, personal services such as hairdressers can reopen by appointment and there will be a phased reopening of non-essential shops. This will start with click and collect and outdoor retail. From 17th May, all retail can open.
As of the 10th May, adult outdoor training will resume in pods of 15, weddings and funerals can have up to 50 people in attendance at the service and weddings can have up to 15 guests outdoors or 6 guests at indoor reception.
On top of this, up to 3 households can meet outdoors or 6 people from any number of households.
Outdoor organised events can take place with up to 15 people in attendance and galleries, museums, libraries and other cultural attractions can reopen.
Restrictions on travel into Ireland and travel abroad remain in place.
Under the new, eased restrictions, people are urged to remain local where possible and stay vigilant to minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19 to your friends, families and communities.
As of last Sunday (2 May) there have been 1,604,644 doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in Ireland:
- 1,159,083 people have received their first dose
- 445,561 people have received their second dose
