Backpacking is easily one of the best ways to travel the world on a budget. And without letting baggage and fears get in your way of getting to know a new location, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a lifetime. But with so many places to see and choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming when deciding where you want to take your backpack next, so here are six of the world’s best backpacking destinations to help you decide.

Ecuador

Ecuador may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of backpacking destinations, but this small South American country has a lot more to offer than many realize. Ecuador’s large variety of landscapes and attractions is what makes it one of the world’s best backpacking destinations.

The nation’s capital, Quito, has a convenient public transportation system. This system makes it easy to stay outside of the city centre while still being able to explore all parts of the capital. After checking out the city, explore the outdoors on the Quilotoa loop hike or by visiting the legendary Galapagos islands; both locations offer some of the most unique sites in the country.

Nicaragua

Nicaragua is an extreme adventurer’s paradise. Offering mountain biking, kayaking and volcano boarding, backpacking in this Central American country is sure to awaken your more adventurous side.

One of the most popular activities to try is volcano boarding. If you want to give it a try then there are many locations to choose from but the most popular is Cerro Negro. This is not too far from the city of Leon. However, the surf doesn’t end on the volcano, Nicaragua has some of the best beaches in the world to hit the waves on, check out Playa Madera to experience some the best surf that the country has to offer. To top it all off, Nicaragua is one of the most inexpensive places to travel in all of Central America making it one of the world’s best backpacking destinations.

Morocco

To enjoy a “world away” feeling without wondering too far from Europe, Morocco is the ideal destination. One of the most popular activities to take part in during your visit to Morocco is riding a camel through the Sahara, and it’s fairly easy to arrange a tour from either M’Hamid or Merzouga.

If you would prefer to enjoy the sand closer to a beach, there is plenty of world-class surfing to be done up and down Morocco’s Atlantic coast. To diversify your trip, even more, don’t forget to check out a medina (old town). Fez is home to the largest one in the world, but every city in the country has one.
